Dyeing to show horticultural talent at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026

Sparsholt College Group are exhibiting a Natural Dye Garden this year at the world famous flower show. It focuses on the amazing colours plants give us. Madder gives red, weld a yellow and indigo and woad are used for blue. These give the primary colours. Common kitchen items such as carrots, onions and walnuts also give great colour. Students are growing plants in their greenhouse and learning the art of dyeing through workshops from Hampshire sustainable textiles company Elka.

Horticultural lecturer Lucy Lewis is guiding her student team to show off their horticultural and design talents which will educate visitors to the stand.

Look out for Hillier’s Pittosporum ‘Green Mound’ – it’s a contender for Plant of the Year and will be on the Sparsholt stand It’s hardy down to -15 degrees celsius.
