Go below decks on Steamship Shieldhall on their new experience days

2026 gives a rare opportunity to step behind the scenes and explore parts of Shieldhall that most visitors never get to see.

There are new Below Decks Tours — a special off-season experience that takes you right into the heart of Britain’s largest working steamship, while directly supporting her future.

Each tour runs from 11:00 – 14:00 and is limited to just five adult guests, creating a relaxed and personal experience.

The visit begins with a fascinating illustrated presentation introducing Shieldhall’s history, engineering and life on board, followed by tea, coffee and a sandwich lunch served on board.

Then there are small-group VIP guided tour through rarely seen areas including the crew spaces, chain locker, steering gear, engine room, boiler room and the bridge, led by their expert volunteer crew.

Hear first-hand stories about winter maintenance, life onboard, and what it takes to operate and preserve a historic steamship.
