Steamship Shieldhall announces cruise into Portsmouth Harbour

For the first time in many years, Southampton’s heritage steamship SS Shieldhall will be visiting Portsmouth Harbour, home to the Royal Navy – an exciting opportunity to view Britain’s naval vessels and the dramatic skyline of Portsmouth, including Southsea; Clarence Pier; Spice Island and the Spinnaker Tower, from the water.

During the cruise, as with all Shieldhall sailings, guests can view the impressive engine room with its original steam engines at work and the bridge, with its traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork. Shieldhall’s steam assisted steering gear (similar to that used on Titanic) can be admired, whilst there will be opportunities to talk to the Captain and Shieldhall’s volunteer crew, and to witness the embarkation and dropping off of the Portsmouth Pilot. An informed commentary will highlight the sights and sounds of Southampton Water, the Solent and Portsmouth. Shieldhall will also pass close to the great ocean liners and container ships in berth and at sea. On board, guests can walk the teak decks or relax in the Saloon with a wide range of refreshments including tea / coffee, real ale and hot and cold food. Children will have fun with an interactive Shieldhall Log Book, collecting stickers from various stations on board!

Shieldhall Chairman John Rose noted: ‘It is wonderful news that we can take Shieldhall into Portsmouth Harbour. Our bridge team have undertaken training with simulators and our passage into the Harbour will be quite a spectacle. Like HMS Victory and the Mary Rose based at the Historic Dockyard, Shieldhall is a member of the National Historic Fleet, though one which can still be experienced in operation. We will sound our whistle to salute these historic vessels when we pass by.’

The cruise will take place on Sun 17 July between 10.30am – 6pm, departing and arriving from Berth 110 in Southampton’s Western Docks. Courtesy parking is available close to the berth. Tickets for the cruise are Adults £52; children £16; family bundle ticket (2 adults & 2 children £120) and may be made online at or through calling the Ticket Manager on 0844 3572329 (calls cost 7p per minute from mobile, calls from landline may vary).
