The Southampton Christmas Market and Flying Santa are set to return

The Southampton Christmas Market and the UK’s only Flying Santa are set to return for another year on Above Bar pedestrian precinct and Bargate Street, from Thursday 14 November – Monday 23 December.

The traditional market features unique, individually designed alpine chalets. There are over 40 independent stallholders offering a range of hand-made, authentic gifts including: environmentally friendly and recycled goods, candles, clothing, magic tricks, jewellery as well as Christmas decorations.

For a bite to eat you have a choice of delicious fare, from delicious German bratwurst and waffles to gingerbread hearts (including vegetarian and vegan options). You can then enjoy a mulled wine or cold stein of beer in one of the open air bars which feature daily live music (including the market’s very own Bavarian musician).

The market’s Flying Santa adds an extra sprinkling of Christmas magic and takes to the skies over the city centre twice daily. Flying Santa shows are Monday – Saturday at 5pm and 7pm / Sundays 4pm and 6pm (each show lasts approximately 15 minutes and is subject to weather conditions). After each of his performances, Santa visits the market and gives sweets to all children at the huge Advent Calendar (provided they have been good!).

Councillor Satvir Kaur, Cabinet Member for Homes and Culture at Southampton City Council, said:

“I’m excited to announce that the Southampton Christmas Market will be returning for another year, with our unique family favourite Flying Santa taking to the skies once again! There really is something for everyone, young and old, with chalets selling unique gifts, live entertainment and delicious food.”

“Southampton has cemented itself as the Christmas destination in the region, and is firmly on the map as the place to be over the festive season. Southampton’s exciting offer also includes a special light switch on event, an ice rink, pantos and live entertainment, in addition to our hugely popular retail offering. There is so much to get involved in for local families, and we look forward to welcoming them and visitors from near and far again to our great city again.”

The Christmas light switch on takes place on Thursday 14 November, with live entertainment from 5pm including music from local community groups, roaming street theatre and performances from Mayflower and NST theatres. The light will be switched on at 6.30pm and the highly anticipated Flying Santa will take his first flight of the season at 7pm, after the streets are lit up.

Chalets are open 10am to 8pm daily with the bars staying open for a further two hours in the evening, until 10pm.
