High-Speed Hydrofoils return to the Solent: SailGP hits Hampshire this July

The global phenomenon of elite foiling catamaran racing is coming back to Hampshire. On 25–26 July 2026, the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix | Portsmouth will take over the Solent.

Following a completely sold-out debut event in the county last summer, Round 8 of the global championship promises to deliver the most adrenaline-fueled weekend of the British summer.

Thirteen national teams will pilot identical, ultra-high-tech F50 catamarans that literally fly across the water. With elite athletes executing short, high-intensity stadium-style races, spectators on the shore will get a front-row seat to absolute sailing mastery.

The Ultimate Spectacle on the Solent

The Solent is legendary in the maritime world for its complex, tumultuous waters. Strong currents and unpredictable gusts ensure that the Hampshire racecourse will test the world’s best crews to their absolute physical and strategic limits.

Key Event Facts

  • Dates – Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 July 2026
  • Location – Southsea Common, Portsmouth, Hampshire
  • Speeds – Up to 60 mph / 100 km/h
  • The Fleet – 13 identical F50 hydrofoiling catamarans
  • Format – Multiple fleet races leading to a winner-takes-all three-boat Grand Final

The F50 fleet has undergone massive technical updates for the 2026 season. Teams are now utilising cutting-edge titanium T-foils and advanced, 27.5-metre modular wing configurations designed to maximize time spent airborne, even in lighter coastal breezes.

Chasing Hometown Glory

All local eyes will be tracking the British boat. Olympic Gold Medallist Dylan Fletcher pilots the Emirates GBR F50, hungry to lock down a crucial victory on home waters. After narrow margins in past events, Fletcher’s crew will face down fierce international syndicates, including the ever-dominant Australian team and a resurgent US squad.

Beyond the elite sports angle, the event shines a spotlight on Hampshire’s blossoming status as a global hub for marine innovation. Last year, SailGP Technologies unveiled a major £10 million innovation facility in nearby Southampton. This site manufactures critical components for the global F50 fleet and drives vital local apprenticeship programs for boatbuilders and composite engineers.

Where to Watch: Fan Experience and Ticket Info
